Wedding Guest Etiquette

June 27, 2014 by Kelly Webster Leave a Comment

Etiquette for dinner parties and weddings can differ based on a number of factors.  While you always want to be respectful and courteous, wedding receptions often require a bit more effort. Nothing should steal the spotlight away from the happy couple, and your participation should serve as a pleasant compliment to the festivities. Let your All Occasion Catering team decipher the wedding guest etiquette for you!

  1. Your attire should match the wedding theme. I If you are going to an outdoor wedding, dark colors and long sleeves don’t really make sense. If the invitation indicates a black-tie affair, an elegant cocktail dress or a sleek suit would be appropriate. . Keep functionality and comfort in mind. When you’re out on the dance floor, you want to put your best moves forward, so wear something moveable  that still meets the style of the wedding.
  2. Mix and mingle with the wedding guests. It can be uncomfortable if you don’t really know anyone, but you have at least one thing in common with them – a relation to the bride and/or groom. This makes for an easy conversation starter. “So how do you know the bride and groom?” or “Do you have a fun story about the bride or groom?”
  3. Get your groove on. It’s a huge celebration, so don’t be afraid to throw your hands up.  This is your “So You Think You Can Dance” moment, without the judges!
  4. While an open bar sounds amazing, this is not the time to show off your drinking skills. To avoid those embarrassing Facebook photos, pace yourself while drinking. Make sure you stay hydrated by drinking water between cocktails. Remember, the focus should remain on  the bride and groom.
  5. Most importantly, have fun! The bride and groom spent a lot of time and money planning this event and want you to join the celebration. So in honor of them, make it a night to remember!
  6. Repeat number 3.
